From May 6-8, 2015, ADD40 and the Transportation Research Board hosted an international conference at the Keck Center in Washington, DC, to explore thought-provoking examples of sustainability thinking, analysis, and practice in the transportation field. The conference promoted approaches that adopted a holistic view on sustainability combining the key dimensions of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental) and addressing present and future needs. It aimed to stimulate debate on how such a view can be consolidated into practice and research. A central aim of the conference was to explore ways to institutionalize sustainable practices globally. The program included technical discussions on sustainability concepts, tools and practices as well as plenary sessions that included leading subject matter experts. Practitioners representing government, private sector, academia, business, and non-profit organizations from around the world as well as the United States joined the conference as participants.
